Amber, a name coming from the Arabic “antar” is a resin that has mineralized over the years. It can contain elements of animal, insect or feather origin. Amber stone has existed for thousands of years: it was even used in prehistoric times in the making of jewelry, art objects, and ornaments. It is said to have formed in the Baltic Sea 40 to 60 million years ago.

In the 6th century BC, the Celts, for example, worked amber and made beads for necklaces, bracelets, etc.

But the amber stone is especially associated with a large number of legends that have crossed the centuries. Amber is a mythical material, full of virtues and mysteries. It is the symbol of the sun, purity and immortality.

The Legend of Jürate and Kastytis
(Known to be one of the most famous legends in Lithuania)

Jürate, goddess of the sirens, lived in an amber palace at the bottom of the Baltic Sea. She had a peaceful life in harmony with the marine fauna. But one day, she met Kastytis, who was a fisherman who cast his nets too close to her home. She decided to chase him away herself, because this fisherman did not obey the sirens, who had tried to scare him away.

Kastytis continued to fill her nets with fish. As Jürate watched her, she noticed her incredible beauty and fell madly in love with her. She took her with her to her amber palace at the bottom of the sea.

Now Perkunas, the god of thunder and father of all the gods, was very furious when he heard this. For he had promised Jürate to another god. So he unleashed storms and sent lightning from the heavens upon the palace. It exploded into thousands of pieces and Kastytis died.

Jürate was also punished and chained to the ruins of her palace, condemned to be tossed by the waves and to mourn her beloved.

This legend continues to resurface during storms, because once the storm has calmed down, pieces of amber are found on the beach. Legend has it that these are Jürasté's tears, clear and pure like his love for Kastytis.

This explanation, concerning ambers which are said to be the result of tears of divinities, is found in other legends of Antiquity.

According to other versions, amber would be the consequence of the tears of the Heliades, daughters of Helios and sisters of Phaethon. Helios struck his son Phaethon, who had stolen his chariot, causing great catastrophes. Phaethon fell into a river and drowned. Helios transformed his daughters into poplars, which lined this river. Their tears fell into the water and were transformed into the amber that we find today.

Another legend tells that Apollo, banished from Olympus, shed tears of amber. They symbolized his nostalgia for Paradise and what still united him to Elysium.

There are many other legends about this amber stone which has many benefits and virtues.

The main deposits are located in Lithuania, Peru, Russia, Mexico, etc.
