Sodalite is a fine (or semi-precious) stone belonging to the silicate family, more precisely the tectosilicates of the feldspathoid group. It is especially known for its intense blue color , often veined with white, which makes it a very popular stone in jewelry and lithotherapy.

• Color: Royal blue to purplish blue, with white calcite veins.

• Hardness: 5.5 to 6 on the Mohs scale (relatively brittle).

• Luster: Vitreous to slightly oily.

• Transparency: Generally opaque, sometimes translucent at the edges.

• Chemical composition: Na₈(Al₆Si₆O₂₄)Cl₂ (sodium, aluminum, silicon, oxygen and chlorine).

• Crystal system: Cubic.
