Morganite is a splendid stone belonging to the beryl family. In fact, at the beginning of its discovery, it was called “pink beryl”.
It seems that this stone was recently discovered either in 1902 in California or in 1911 in Madagascar. No legend or myth evokes this fabulous stone.
In fact, George Frederick Kunz, an American mineralogist (1856 - 1932) gave the name morganite to this pink beryl. He is one of the founders of the carat unit for precious stones. He chose this name to honor his patron and friend, banker and great mineral collector, John Pierpont Morgan.
Morganites are highly prized and symbolize love and passion. Currently, in the British Museum in London, there is a magnificent specimen of morganite, weighing about 600 carats, from Madagascar. It has a splendid color and was cut into a cushion shape. At the same time, it is possible to admire magnificent pieces of 235 or 250 carats at the Smithson Institute in the United States.
The largest morganites were discovered in Brazil in 1968. Their presence was indicated by a 3m x 9m geode. As a reminder, a geode is a rock cavity lined with crystals and various mineral materials.
Morganite is a beryl with a transparent to translucent appearance, just like aquamarine or emerald. It owes its magnificent color to the presence of manganese. Its hues can vary from pink to peach or magnolia.
Its color is enriched with cesium and varies according to the angle of the light that pierces it. It is therefore a jewel with excellent pleochroism. The most prized color of morganite remains the one called peach blossom.
It has a hexagonal crystal system, which means that it has 6 faces. Its hardness is 7.5 to 8 on the Mohs scale. For comparison, diamond has the highest hardness, which is 10 on the same scale. This type of stone is found in the pegmatite parts (magmatic rock with large crystals) of metamorphic rocks.
Be careful, because you can find morganites that have been heated to improve their color, but they have less value. Morganite has an appearance without imperfections or inclusions. This splendid mineral stone is very pure, relatively transparent to the naked eye.
Nowadays, this fabulous stone is used in jewelry for the creation of magnificent jewels, frequently associated with rose gold. It is also very widespread in the world of lithotherapy because of its many virtues.
The main deposits are in Brazil, Madagascar, Australia, China, etc.
