How and where an emerald forms

Two main geological configurations produce emeralds. The first model, known as hydrothermal-magmatic, mobilizes hot fluids from granitic pegmatites that encounter ultrabasic rocks rich in chromium. Colombia, the global benchmark

Muzo

Chivor

Zambia, leading producer by volume

Zambia is currently the leading producer of emeralds by volume, with approximately 20% of global production concentrated in the Kafubu district, near Kitwe. The main deposit is exploited by the Kagem mine, owned by the Gemfields group, opened in 1976 and industrialized on a large scale since the 2000s. Zambian production is traced and marketed through quarterly auctions, making it one of the best-documented origins on the market.

Zambian emeralds are recognizable by a more bluish green than Colombian ones, a consequence of a higher iron content in the formation environment. Their transparency is generally good, and their inclusions, often less dense than those of Colombian emeralds, make them easier to cut into large, clean faceted stones. Brazil, abundance and variable quality

Brazil has been producing emeralds since the 16th century, but modern exploitation took off in the 1960s with the discovery of the Itabira deposit in Minas Gerais. The Belmont mine, still active, remains the best-known Brazilian site. Other important deposits are found in Carnaiba and Socotó (Bahia state), Santa Terezinha (Goiás), and Itaberai. However, the best Belmont stones can visually compete with mid-range Muzo emeralds. Afghanistan, Pakistan and Russia

Afghanistan, in the Panjshir Valley, produces some of the purest emeralds in the world, sometimes qualitatively compared to the best from Colombia. The deposit, known since antiquity, has remained artisanal due to successive conflicts. Panjshir stones exhibit a pure and luminous green, with discreet inclusions and often excellent transparency. Production is low and erratic, making these stones rare on the European market.

Pakistan extracts emeralds in the Swat Valley, around the historic Mingora mine, exploited since at least antiquity (Roman earrings adorned with Mingora emeralds have been found). Zimbabwe was a historical player with the Sandawana mine, opened in 1956. Its emeralds are renowned for their small size (rarely more than 1 carat) but intense pure green color. Production has sharply declined since 2008, but the mine remains sporadically active.

Madagascar has been producing small, good quality emeralds since the 1970s, notably in the Morafeno region on the east coast. Production is modest but regular. How to identify the origin of an emerald

Identifying the origin of an emerald is one of the most delicate exercises in gemology. No single criterion is sufficient; it is a combination of clues that allows a laboratory to make a pronouncement, and even then, the determination of origin remains an expert opinion, never an absolute certainty. Three families of criteria come into play.

Internal inclusions are the primary indicator. Colombian emeralds typically exhibit a characteristic "garden" combining cubic calcite crystals, pyrite, and sometimes three-phase inclusions (gas, liquid, solid) that are almost pathognomonic of Colombian origin. Zambian emeralds, on the other hand, contain amphibole and mica inclusions. Brazilian emeralds have mica inclusions and black chromite or iron crystals.

The absorption spectrum obtained through UV-Vis and infrared spectroscopy provides a second reading.
