The agate stone of the chalcedony family is composed of silicon dioxide. It is a fine stone with a hardness of between 6 and 7 Mohs. Its density is usually 2.58, but can reach 2.64.
From the Greek akhatês, agate owes its name to a river in Sicily in which it was found in abundance. In Antiquity, agate jewelry was already adorned, but it also had mystical and healing virtues. The Persians burned agate to ward off storms and ensure good harvests. The Romans made elixirs to treat various ailments, including snake bites. Today, agate remains a flagship stone in jewelry.
