There are no real legends or stories relating to yellow aventurine. However, we know that for some civilizations, it had the function of bringing good luck and serving as a talisman. For the Celts, it is a stone of spiritual knowledge and magic. For the Chinese, it is considered an imperial stone. Then, in the Middle Ages, it was the stone worn by gamblers and therefore a lucky stone.
In fact, many beliefs associate this natural stone with good fortune, mental powers, or magic.
Like all aventurines, it owes its name to an Italian glassmaker. In the 17th century, glassmakers settled in Venice had to leave their workshops due to potential fires caused by glass manufacturing. They went to settle on the island of Murano. Moreover, this allowed them to keep their manufacturing methods secret.
A glassmaker accidentally spilled copper flakes into molten glass. The effect was spectacular; the glass seemed to shine brightly. Thus, the circumstances of this discovery, by chance, gave the aventurine stone its name, derived from the Italian word "per aventura" (by chance).
But be careful not to confuse natural aventurine stone with aventurine glass, manufactured in Murano, with copper flakes, as both exist.
Like rock crystal, aventurine stone is a variety of quartz, possessing various colors and metallic reflections due to different inclusions. The intense shades of aventurine come from pyrite (a mineral nicknamed "fool's gold") or muscovite.
This stone is mainly formed of crystalline granules invisible to the naked eye. This composition is the origin of its greater or lesser opacity. Unlike other stones belonging to quartz, aventurine has lower hardness but greater density. These differences are explained by the presence of mineral or metallic inclusions.
Aventurine is a stone very present in igneous and metamorphic rocks in all sorts of forms (pebbles, nodules, or stalactites).
The main deposits of aventurine are found in Brazil, the United States, and China.
