In 2018, Erik Rintamaki, a mineral enthusiast and dealer, was walking on a beach on Lake Superior, near Michigan in the United States, when he discovered three small fluorescent pebbles.

As a reminder, fluorescence is a property possessed by certain minerals "to absorb light and re-emit it as radiation of a longer wavelength. Fluorescence, which stops as soon as the illumination ceases, is distinguished from phosphorescence, which persists." (Source www.larousse.fr).
Intrigued, he decided to send the stones he had discovered to Michigan Tech University. They identified them as clasts (fragments of mineral or organic origin that make up a rock) of syenite containing fluorescent sodalite. This unique mineral variety had not been identified before. The stones were named "yooperlite" after the nickname "yooper" given to the inhabitants of Michigan's Upper Peninsula.

During his interview with CBS, Erik Rintamaki said, "I was blown away by the number of these stones you find on these beaches!" He then began organizing group treasure hunts on the lake's south shore. All you need is a black light to sweep the stones and pebbles across the beach. Thanks to the presence of fluorescent sodalite, the stones emit an incredible orange or yellow glow when the UV light shines on them.

Given the recent discovery of yooperlite, there are no legends or myths associated with it. No jewelry or ancient objects made of yooperlite have been discovered during archaeological excavations.

The main deposits of yooperlite are in Russia.

In crystal healing, yooperlite is reputed to be a stone of truth. Its wearer expresses their feelings and emotions objectively. They do not hide their feelings and are very frank. This stone helps to release negative thoughts, anger, jealousy, etc.
This stone helps combat phobias and buried fears. Most often, these are blockages linked to childhood traumas. It encourages you to move forward in life and achieve your goals.

Yooperlite promotes introspection and reconnection with one's inner self. It is excellent for meditation. It provides a mind full of insight and clarity. It facilitates access to inner peace and serenity.
This stone encourages overcoming anxieties and fears, and fosters self-confidence. The wearer opens themselves to others and develops feelings of compassion and empathy. This stone stimulates self-acceptance and self-esteem.

It is recommended for students during exam periods and for people changing careers, as it facilitates memorization. It provides confidence and excellent eloquence, ideal for exams.
