Serpentine is not a mineral species but a family of minerals from the silicate group, phyllosilicate subgroup. This family contains more than 20 members or polymorphs and can be found in metamorphic rocks rich in iron, aluminum, manganese, nickel, zinc, calcium and/or magnesium hydroxides. Their olive color and their flexible, scaly appearance are the origin of the name of their original rocks, ophidian rocks coming from the Greek ophidis, snake, and its mineral form serpentine which comes from the Latin serpentinus meaning stone snake.
