Jade is a very hard and tenacious gemstone used in ornamentation and jewelry. Its etymological origin is Spanish: the conquistadors of the 15th century baptized it piedra de ijada - literally stone for the (iliac) fossa: according to Indian belief, it was believed to cure kidney ailments and renal colic but also to ward off evil spirits . Jade actually refers to two distinct minerals that can have a similar appearance: jadeite and nephrite. Nephrite jade is essentially composed of nephrite, a fairly common calcium and magnesium silicate from the amphibole group. Jadeite jade composed essentially of jadeite, a sodium and aluminum silicate from the pyroxene group, harder, denser, rarer and considered more precious.
