Others claim that shungite is pieces of the planet Phaeton, located between Mars and Jupiter. It was destroyed and gave rise to the asteroid belt. Finally, other researchers have discovered a volcanic origin for shungite.

The main shungite deposit is therefore in Russia, in the village of Shunga, on the shore of Lake Onega.
