Serpentine belongs to the silicate mineral family, specifically the phyllosilicate subgroup. This family contains more than 20 members or polymorphs and is found in metamorphic rocks rich in hydroxides of iron, aluminum, manganese, nickel, zinc, calcium, and/or magnesium.
Their olive colour and their supple and scaly appearance is the origin of the name of their original rocks, the ophidian rocks coming from the Greek ophidis, serpent, and from its mineral form serpentine which comes from the Latin serpentinus which means stone serpent.
