Obsidian is a silica-rich volcanic rock. Different types of obsidian exist, varying due to the rock's chemical composition. Obsidian is actually a natural glass, formed during the eruption of silica-rich lava with less than 3% water. Upon exiting the volcano, it cools very rapidly, freezing the crystallization process.
This can be likened to a piece of lava suddenly solidified as it emerges from the volcano. The direct consequence of this phenomenon is the rock's inability to crystallize. The result is the creation of a volcanic glass with a uniform texture, qualified as an amorphous mineral. Furthermore, obsidian has sharp edges and very fine blades. It is a natural mineral with a complex composition.
Thus, obsidian is essentially composed of silicon dioxide, approximately 70% or more. Its fracture is conchoidal (i.e., furrowed with curved and concentric striations) and its hardness is 5 to 5.5 on the Mohs scale. It has different colors and reflections due to the volcano where it was discovered and its various inclusions. It should be noted that each deposit, linked to a volcano, provides a different type of obsidian.
Green, brown, grey, or black, it can sometimes have golden, silver, or even rainbow reflections (an effect produced by the presence of hematite or magnesite). Sometimes, two colors of obsidian can also mix.
Rainbow obsidian is also called celestial eye obsidian. It is a black obsidian with color zones ranging from violet to green.
Rainbow obsidian is the result of a rare phenomenon: the contact of lava with water, when lava flows into a lake or ocean. The thermal shock then causes a vitreous texture. Thus, the trapped iron and magnesium create a mixture of rainbow colors.
Rainbow obsidian is a natural glass. This volcanic stone solidified in a layer up to 40 cm thick. When the stone is cut into a sphere shape, the reflections represent concentric circles reminiscent of eyes. In the United States, it is preferred to be called rainbow obsidian due to its multiple colors.
During the layered deposition of nanoparticles of elements (feldspar, hedenbergite, magnetite, etc.), an optical effect occurs. Light penetrating the obsidian becomes trapped within the natural glass. A rainbow effect is produced, giving the stone its soft colors. An eye shape is observed when the stone is polished.
In lithotherapy, rainbow obsidian possesses an extremely protective power. It surrounds its wearer with an armor, repelling negative energies and harmful influences. It transforms them into light and wards off bad luck.
This obsidian helps develop the perception of others and reveals the true personality of the interlocutor. Thus, it prevents its wearer from being taken advantage of by more or less honest people.
It is said to be a terribly effective stone during introspection. One must be prepared before testing it. It brings to light deeply hidden events within the mind. Their revelation can cause a shock.
This incredible stone helps to uncover certain traumas that cause psychological blockages. It provides the ability to move forward in life and overcome difficulties encountered.
Rainbow obsidian promotes assurance and self-confidence. It provides serenity, especially at bedtime. It is ideal for people who have restless thoughts and suffer from insomnia. Placed in a bedroom, it promotes quality sleep.
This stone encourages optimism and positivity. It brings the calm and peace necessary for happiness. The serenity it emanates provides well-being and openness towards others. It instills compassion and empathy towards others.
