Obsidian is a volcanic rock rich in silica. Different kinds of obsidian exist, differing due to the rock's chemical composition. Obsidian is actually a natural glass, formed during a silica-rich lava eruption with less than 3% water. Upon exiting the volcano, it cools very rapidly, freezing the crystallization process.

This can be likened to a piece of lava suddenly solidified upon exiting the volcano. The direct consequence of this phenomenon is the impossibility for the rock to crystallize. The result is the creation of volcanic glass with a uniform texture, which is described as an amorphous mineral. Furthermore, obsidian has sharp edges and very fine blades. Green, brown, gray or black, it can have sometimes golden, silver, or even rainbow-colored reflections (an effect produced by the presence of hematites or magnesites). Sometimes, two colors of obsidian also mix. This is pure and basic obsidian. Composed of more than 70% silica, its beautiful dark color is due to the presence of iron. It has almost no inclusions except for a few magnetite nanoparticles. During archaeological excavations, tools and weapons made of black obsidian are often discovered.
