Greek green porphyry is a variety of porphyry widely used by the Romans and later in Italy in religious architecture. It is recognizable by its color and light green feldspar crystals, sometimes with inclusions of blue or mauve chalcedony. Its luminous color and hardness make it a favorite stone for paving, associated with other porphyries, such as red imperial porphyry, and marble. It is found at St. Mark's in Venice, but also at St. Peter's in Rome in the Vatican. Green porphyry is an extremely rare porphyry, which has never been extensively exploited. The largest blocks found were used in Antiquity and the Renaissance in the form of columns.
