Natural agate tumbled stone from Brazil.
Colors and patterns may vary from one stone to another.
Agate has been known by its name for three or four centuries BC. It was named by the Greek philosopher Theophrastus (371 BC / 288 BC), who discovered it in the Akhates River in southern Italy, and even in Sicily. Today, the river is called the Dirillo and it is still quite possible to find various types of agate, in multiple colors such as yellow, red, blue, pink, etc., along this river.
However, agate is not found only in this river. Its formation takes place in volcanic rocks, whether effusive, extrusive or volcanic. Primarily, it is located in the cavities of basalt or rhyolite, but it can also form in sedimentary rocks.
Agate is mainly composed of chalcedony and quartz, and largely of silica. The presence of iron and manganese oxides gives it its banded appearance and white stripes. It has a hardness of 6.5 to 7 on the Mohs scale. For comparison, diamond has a hardness of 10 on the same scale, which is the highest hardness.
All the characteristics of agate mentioned above are accurate for all agates. However, grey agate stands out slightly because it is composed of various pieces of shells buried at the bottom of the sea. Be careful not to confuse it with fossil agate.
In reality, the term grey agate encompasses several stones such as grey Botswana agate, dendritic agate, grey crazy lace agate. Traces of these agates have been found during archaeological excavations. Since antiquity, grey agate was already used in the manufacture of various jewelry, amulets, or ornamental objects.
Agate, like most agates, is renowned for its protective power, especially against insect bites, snake bites, and certain diseases.
The main deposits are located in Madagascar, Botswana, etc.
