Beautiful 925 sterling silver heart-shaped earrings featuring a 7mm Saint Lucia eye
This is the operculum of a seashell that can be collected on some beaches after a big storm.
The size of the opercula can vary from 2 mm to 3 cm.
It was in the 4th century that the legend of St. Lucy was born: a young girl from the Syracuse nobility who obtained the miraculous cure of her mother, who suffered from an incurable disease, through repeated prayers to the Virgin Mary.
Devoting herself to the latter with boundless worship and devotion, she tore out her eyes and threw them into the sea so as not to be diverted from her faith and to drive away her suitors.
Completely devoted to prayer, she performed many miracles.
In response to this devotion, the Blessed Virgin restored his sight and gave him more beautiful and luminous eyes ("Occhji belli e lucentti").
The operculum of the shell known as the "Rough Turbo," found on Mediterranean shores, symbolizes the eyes of Saint Lucia. Wearing one is said to ward off the evil eye and bring good luck.
It is worth noting that variations of this symbolism can be found throughout the Mediterranean basin, and beyond (notably in Indonesia).
In Corsica, "Saint Lucia's eye" is considered a lucky charm.
