Fossilized or petrified wood (from the Greek petro meaning "stone", literally "wood transformed into stone") is a type of fossil.
It is composed of fossilized wood where all traces of organic matter have been replaced by minerals (most often silicates, such as quartz), while retaining the original structure of the wood.
The petrification process occurs when wood is buried under a layer of sediment, where it is initially preserved due to a lack of oxygen, before mineral-rich water circulates through the sediment and gradually replaces the wood cells with minerals. It probably takes less than a hundred years for some pieces of wood to become petrified.
