Orange calcite belongs to the large family of calcites. It is one of the most widespread minerals worldwide. It can consist mainly of calcium carbonate and be of great purity. Thus, it can be found completely white or transparent. Iceland spar illustrates the beautiful example of white calcite. Its crystals, of fabulous clarity and purity, can be of impressive size, up to 25m long.
Slight distinctions in mineralogical composition and various metal inclusions give calcites their colors. Inclusions of iron, zinc, lead, magnesium, copper, manganese, nickel, aluminum, vanadium, strontium, chromium, cobalt, or molybdenum have been reported. The percentage of metal present in calcite changes the nature of the stone. Indeed, calcite retains its name as long as the calcium content remains predominant. So, if the dominant metal in the stone is:
manganese, it will be rhodochrosite;
iron, it will be siderite;
zinc, it will be smithsonite;
cobalt, it will be spherocobaltite;
magnesium, it will be magnesite;
strontium, it will be strontianocalcite;
lead, it will be plumonocalcite;
etc.
Orange calcite is relatively common, but there are other, more or less rare colors such as pink, red, brown, black, yellow, blue, or green. Orange calcite is characterized by a rhombohedral crystal system. It is a polymorphic crystal, which occurs in various forms, such as elongated prisms, tablets, or earthy, etc.
Highly effervescent in nitric acid, calcite can disappear completely. Moreover, it can produce some fluorescence, but its main quality is birefringence. This is a singular faculty caused by light. Objects viewed through pure calcite appear in duplicate.
There are no legends about calcite, either in various mythologies or in stories passed down through the ages. We only know that the Egyptians already possessed objects or statuettes carved from calcite stones.
Originally, Pliny the Elder named a mineral "calx," a Latin word meaning limestone. Later, the origin of the name calcite is explained by its derivation from the Latin "calcis," meaning lime.
From the 17th century onwards, calcite was the subject of numerous studies due to its optical peculiarities and the special cleavage of the stone. Thus, much research was carried out. Then, this led to the attribution of different names to calcite, such as carbonated lime, aphrite, calcareous spar, or focobonite.
Calcite is undoubtedly one of the most abundant minerals on earth. It is one of the most common constituents of limestone and marble rocks.
The main deposits are in Brazil, Mexico, the United States, etc.
The vibrational energy of orange calcite clarifies thoughts and balances emotions. Wearing orange calcite increases memory and assimilation capacities. This allows for optimized reflections and pushes away negative waves so as not to disturb concentration.
