Chrysoprase owes its name to the Greek names “chrysos” meaning “gold” because of its shine and “praso” meaning “leek” because of its beautiful green color. This color is determined by the presence of nickel. Thus, chrysoprase offers a range of green colors, ranging from apple green to deep green.

The more intense the green, the higher the nickel content. This stone does not tolerate heat and its color may be altered following exposure to a strong heat source. When repairing jewelry, it is important not to heat the stone.

Chrysoprase is sometimes nicknamed “Venus stone”. It belongs to the chalcedony family. It is therefore a kind of mineral in the fibrous form of microcrystalline quartz, containing hydrated silicates and micro-inclusions of nickel.

It is worth noting that the largest chrysoprase was found in Australia and weighs 16,400 kg. Today, this stone is still used in jewelry. In fact, due to its hardness of 6.5 to 7 on the Mohs scale, it can be cut and given different shapes.

The origin of chrysoprase goes back thousands of years. It was used by ancient civilizations such as the Greeks, Romans, Egyptians. They made seals, jewelry, ornaments.

In the Apocalypse, when the city of the New Jerusalem is described in detail, it is said that the foundations of the wall contain precious or fine stones, notably chrysoprases.

Albertus Magnus (1200 - 1280), a Dominican friar who was also a philosopher, theologian, naturalist and chemist, recounts that Alexander the Great (356 - 323 BC), king of Macedonia, always carried a chrysoprase with him when he went to war. He also attributed his successes to wearing this chrysoprase, believing that it gave him clairvoyance and helped him make the right strategic decisions. But one day, he lost this stone in a river and could not find it again. Following this incident, Alexander the Great never won another battle.

In the Middle Ages, it was believed that this stone allowed one to become invisible if one put it in one's mouth. It is also said that it indicated the presence of poisons. In fact, if it lost its color, it meant the proximity of a poison.

Moreover, Frederick II of Prussia (1712 - 1786) appreciated the beauty of chrysoprase so much that he used it in large quantities for the decoration of his palace. Later, in the Victorian era, in the 19th century, many jewels were made of chrysoprase in the form of cameos, pearls, cabochons.

The main deposits are located in Australia, Germany, the United States and Madagascar.
