Grossular green garnet is a mineral, belonging to the garnet family, composed of aluminum and calcium. The color of grossular garnet can vary from green to yellow, from brown to red, from orange to black. The variety of grossular garnet with a color identical to that of emerald is called tsavorite. It comes from the Tsavo Natural Park, located in Kenya. Tsavorite is rich in vanadium and chromium. It is the best known grossular green garnet.
For the record, garnet is a family of minerals from the nesosilicate group, with a cubic crystal system. Gem quality garnets are fine stones. The most common color of garnets is red, but there is a whole range of garnets of different shades. It should be noted that there is no blue garnet.
The hardness of garnets, which is 6.5 to 7.0 on the Mohs scale (which goes from 1 to 10), allows them to be used as an abrasive in industry. Historically, this stone, much more widespread than sapphire or ruby, was used to engrave other stones such as agates, jaspers, and ivory.
Garnets are also used by geologists because they are valuable sources of information as a geothermobarometer. In fact, they allow the temperature and/or pressure of formation of a rock to be established. Thus, this tells geologists whether a rock has the conditions to contain diamonds or oil.
Garnet is a mineral known since ancient times. Roman, Egyptian and Greek civilizations used garnet in the sculpture of faces or animals.
In the Bible, it is said that Noah guided his ark through the flood with garnet lanterns. The Vikings used garnet during funeral ceremonies to allow their dead to reach paradise.
Theophrastus, a philosopher of ancient Greece (-372/-287 BC) had discovered garnet stones and nicknamed them “anthrax” meaning “coal”. Then, Pliny the Elder, a Roman naturalist (23-79 AD) named the almandine garnet “carbunculus” meaning “burning coal”.
In 1270, Albert the Great, German theologian and philosopher (1193-1280) discovered this mineral and decided to give it the name “malum granatum” translated as pomegranate.
Closer to home, in Asia, Pakistani warriors replaced their lead bullets with garnet bullets, which were considered more deadly.
The main deposits are located in Mali, the United States, Canada, India, and Madagascar.
Green Grossular Garnet is particularly suitable for young teenage girls who are too emotional, too dreamy, and even introverted. It gives them serenity and self-confidence. It erases complexes and opens up communication with others. Hypersensitive people learn to manage their emotions.
