The different stones owe their names either according to their color, or according to their physical characteristics or the legends which are attached.

There are different versions of the name of the dragon's blood jasper stone. The most recent explanation of its etymology is due to the location of one of its first deposits, that is, the one located in the Limpopo province of South Africa, very close to a hill in the shape of a dragon.

Another version: Dragon's Blood Jasper was named after the red spots that evoke blood stains, in this case that of a dragon. Legend has it that a courageous Scandinavian warrior wanted to defend his people against a ferocious dragon that was terrorizing them. Dragon's blood jasper belongs to the large jasper family. It is a sedimentary rock containing 80 to 95% silica, calcium carbonate. It is classified with microcrystalline quartz and can sometimes contain clay. It is also composed of chalcedony radiolaria taken in a chalcedony cement.

Dragon's blood jasper has a hardness of 6.5 to 7 on the Mohs scale. For comparison, diamond has the highest hardness, which is 10 on the same scale.
