Aventurine owes its name to the Italian word "ventura," which means chance. In the 17th century, Venetian glassmakers were forced to relocate to the small island of Murano. This was to protect Venice by preventing fires during the production of decorative glass. It also allowed them to keep their secrets.
Then one day, a glassmaker accidentally spilled some copper shavings into the glass. The effect was immediate, producing a resplendent glass with glittery reflections. This glass with its copper flakes was created entirely by chance, per ventura, hence its name “aventurine.” This name was later given to the natural stone known today.
The Greeks also used it to attract luck. However, in the Middle Ages, this stone was used by gamblers until the 19th century.
Tibetans believed that blue aventurine cured myopia. They also placed blue aventurine stones on the eyes of their statues. They believed this increased the statues' powers of vision.
Among the Chinese, blue aventurine stone was used to honor Kuan-Yin, the Chinese goddess of mercy, compassion, and love. This goddess is the most worshipped of the Chinese goddesses, as she had the power to protect women, children, and the unfortunate.
Blue aventurine is a mixture of quartz with inclusions of shiny minerals. These inclusions give the stone a metallic color. Aventurine comes in a variety of colors. In fact, these colors are due to the different crystals that mixed together during the many stages of the stone's formation. In blue aventurine, we find inclusions of dumortierite.
This stone surprises with its glittery effects and shines when exposed to light. Blue aventurine is most often translucent, but sometimes the significant presence of a mineral makes it opaque.
This blue color variation is very rare. Aventurine forms in igneous rocks (rocks formed when magma cools), in pegmatites (igneous rocks with large crystals), and in hydrothermal veins. It is also found in schists (rocks with a flaky appearance) or alluvium (deposits of debris such as sand, mud, etc.).
The main deposits are located in Brazil, the United States, India and China.
