Long before being named seraphinite, this green stone was called chlorite. This name comes from the Greek Khloros meaning green. The root of this name is found in chlorophyll, this plant pigment that gives the green color to plants. This green stone owes its color to the presence of mica particles.

Then the name green chlorite was replaced by the commercial name seraphinite, much more evocative. This name of seraphinite was given to it because of its silvery shimmers, evoking the wings of the Seraph, an angel described in a biblical story. This celestial creature has 3 pairs of wings. It is found in the Bible around the throne of God.

This stone was identified very recently by the Russian mineralogist Nikolai Ivanovich in the late 1880s. Thanks to his discovery, this mineralogist became the director of the famous “Imperial Mineralogy Association” in St. Petersburg.

This type of stone is made up of successive layers of aluminosilicates and various metallic elements. It is a gem variety of clinochlore, from the chlorite group. It is also made up of magnesium, aluminum, iron and silicates.

This incredible stone therefore has shimmering silver fibers reminiscent of feathers. Polishing its facets reveals a shimmering luminescence.

No legend, no myth is attached to this stone. We know that it was used in the manufacture of ointments allowing the disinfection and the soothing of skin problems.

It is a soft stone that has a hardness of 2 to 2.5 on the Mohs scale. For comparison, diamond has the highest hardness, which is 10 on the same scale. This stone must therefore be handled with care. Its production is not significant, so it tends to increase in value and its price increases accordingly.
