The Tiffany Stone is a stone discovered in 1969 in the United States, west of Utah, in a mine called Wellman Beryllium Mine, now closed.
This fabulous stone is composed primarily of opalized fluorite which produces a characteristic blend of blue violets, rich purples, lavender colors. It has veins or spots of mixed quartz, chalcedony, dolomite, rhodonite, black manganese oxides, bertrandite (containing beryllium), solid white or yellow opal.
As a result, the hardness of this stone is between 4 and 7 depending on the minerals that compose it. Tiffany Stone was once called bertrandite. This name did not really suit it, because it only contains 1 to 2% bertrandite, beryllium silicate. This beryllium silicate was mined in this mine. Indeed, almost all of the stone was crushed to produce beryllium.
However, employees have diverted some specimens and passed them on to collectors. It is worth noting that Tiffany Stone has been given other names such as “opal fluorite, opalized fluorite.” It has even been incorrectly named “bertrandite,” since this mineral only makes up a few percent of the rock. It has even been given the name “Ice Cream Stone” because of its delightfully nuanced color.
For the record, the Brush Wellman mine was accessible to collectors. Thus, there is an “old stock” where the most beautiful specimens of Tiffany Stone are found. These are the miners who took them out of the mine or privileged people authorized to collect this incredible rock on certain private lands. Thus, nowadays, there are very few authentic Tiffany stones, so it is recommended that potential buyers check the origin of the stone.
Tiffany Stone has the incredible particularity of being fluorescent under ultraviolet light. It forms nodules surrounded by a matrix (set of materials without economic interest) in this case limestone, from which it must be released in order to reveal its beautiful blue color due to fluorite. However, depending on its inclusions, it can take on other colors. It can therefore appear in different crystalline systems (amorphous, cubic, etc.). The purple variety remains the most appreciated.
It is a common misconception that this beautiful purple stone is named after Tiffany and Co., the famous luxury goods retailer. However, this company was never associated with either the mine or the stone. It seems more likely that the stone is named after the daughter of a miner who worked at the site. However, the miner's name is not found in any written records.
The main deposit is in the United States.
