For comparison, diamonds have a hardness of 10, the maximum hardness on this same scale. Cat's eye tourmaline is generally translucent and comes in a variety of colors. It is found in green, pink, yellow, orange, blue to blue-green, purple to red, green to brown, and black.

Cat's eye tourmaline is generally translucent to opaque. Once cut and polished, it exhibits a vitreous to resinous luster.
