In 2018, mineral enthusiast and dealer Erik Rintamaki was walking along a beach on Lake Superior, near Michigan in the United States, when he discovered three small fluorescent pebbles.

For reference, fluorescence is a property possessed by certain minerals "to absorb light and re-emit it as radiation of a longer wavelength. Fluorescence is distinguished from phosphorescence, which persists as soon as the illumination ceases.” (Source: www.larousse.fr).
Intrigued, he decided to send the stones he had discovered to the university organization Michigan Tech. They identified them as clasts (fragments of mineral or organic origin that make up a rock) of syenite containing fluorescent sodalite. This unique mineral variety had not been identified before. These stones were named "yooperlite" because of the nickname "yooper" given to the inhabitants of Michigan's Upper Peninsula.

During an interview with the CBS network, Erik Rintamaki stated, "I was amazed by the number of these stones found on these beaches!" He also began organizing group hunts on the lake's south shore. All you need is a blacklight and to sweep the beach for stones and pebbles. Thanks to the presence of fluorescent sodalite, the stones emit an incredible orange or yellow glow when exposed to UV light.
