In 2018, Erik Rintamaki, a mineral enthusiast and dealer, was walking on a beach on Lake Superior, near Michigan in the United States, and discovered three small fluorescent pebbles.

For the record, fluorescence is a property that certain minerals possess "to absorb light and re-emit it in the form of radiation of a longer wavelength. We distinguish fluorescence, which stops as soon as the illumination ceases, from phosphorescence, which persists." (Source www.larousse.fr).
Curious, he then decided to send the stones of his discovery to the university organization Michigan Tech. The latter identified them as being clasts (fragments of mineral or organic origin entering into the composition of a rock) of syenite containing fluorescent sodalite. This unique mineral variety had not yet been identified before. These stones were named "yooperlite" because of the nickname "yooper" given to the inhabitants of the Upper Peninsula of Michigan.

In his interview with CBS, Erik Rintamaki said, "I was blown away by the number of these stones that you find on these beaches!" So he started organizing group hunts on the south shore of the lake. All you have to do is get a black light and sweep the stones and pebbles on the beach. Thanks to the presence of fluorescent sodalite, the stones give off an incredible orange or yellow glow when the UV lamp passes over them.

In view of the recent discovery of yooperlite, there are no legends or myths related to it. No jewelry or ancient objects made of yooperlite have been discovered during archaeological excavations.
