Around 4000 BC, blue chalcedony was used in Asia Minor (more precisely in modern-day Turkey). This stone is found mainly near hot springs, sedimentary areas, or areas with high seismic activity. Its name derives from its origins in the ancient Greek city of Chalcedon (present-day Kadiköy in Turkey).
The term chalcedony refers to all microcrystalline and cryptocrystalline quartz species (assemblies of very small crystals). It also refers to the gemstone and a family of minerals. Blue chalcedony ranges in color from white to blue to gray. It has various synonyms such as chalcedony, chalcedonite, and merlinite.
4000 years BC, the Babylonians used chalcedony in the manufacture of their seals, tools and weapons. Indeed, this stone proved to be particularly hard and once sharpened, very sharp.
Later, the Assyrians made cylinder seals from chalcedony. These are small scrolls with signs and symbols carved in relief to stamp designs onto the wax. The bluestone did not adhere to the wax and allowed for relatively fine and precise marking.
In ancient Rome, the Romans believed that chalcedony stone enabled them to speak in public fluently and convincingly. Indeed, the great orator and statesman Cicero is said to have worn a blue chalcedony pendant during each of his public appearances. The Romans also used this magnificent blue stone to make offerings to their gods and jewelry for their wives (especially brooches and rings).
In ancient Egypt, the Egyptians made many scarabs from blue chalcedony. A commemorative scarab is a piece of jewelry made for a pharaoh, engraved with a text relating to a significant event during the reign. They also made jewelry and other objects as offerings. They placed these objects on the bodies of the deceased to help them pass the test of the Judgment of the Soul.
Blue chalcedony is mentioned and described many times in divine scriptures. It can be found in the Bible, the Torah, and the Quran. In the Middle Ages, this blue stone was used as a healing stone that provided relief to angry and overly sensitive people. Indeed, at that time, anger was already considered a behavioral disorder.
Over the centuries, blue chalcedony was used for decorative purposes, especially during the Renaissance. This stone has been identified in several colors, including black, red, and green.
Nowadays, the term chalcedony, in jewelry, refers to certain stones of a single color, translucent, bluish or gray. It is used in the creation of magnificent jewelry (especially rings, bracelets or pendants). It also has numerous virtues in lithotherapy.
The main deposits are located in Namibia, Malawi, Brazil, etc.
Blue chalcedony is a stone of calm. It represents gentleness, instilling calm and serenity. It is believed to have the power to overcome sorrow and sadness. It helps channel those who are overworked, aggressive, and emotionally unstable.
