Fossil wood is one of the many peculiarities of nature. This fossil wood is half stone/half wood. It is also called petrified wood, silicified wood or xyloid. In fact, the tree was transformed into stone by the principle of petrification. This term for petrified wood comes from the Greek petro, meaning “stone”. Fossil wood is the result of a very long transformation that began millions of years ago, during the prehistoric era. It has been dated more precisely to 225 million years ago.
In order to fully understand its formation, you must have a good foundation in geology (science which studies the Earth to understand its nature and all the characteristics of the subsoil of a region), in paleobotany (study of fossil plants and major stages in the history of plants), or in paleoenvironment (ancient environments ranging from history to paleontology, study of fossilization, rocks, etc.).
In fact, around 225 million years ago, there existed a prehistoric forest of incredible immensity and biodiversity. There were many varieties of trees: araucarias, schiderias, ginko biloba, etc. At that time, all species of dinosaurs coexisted and fed on the vegetation of this forest.
Then, incessant rains began to fall, pouring down torrents of water, washing away thousands of trees. An immense river replaced this fabulous forest and the trees were flooded. Although drowned in water, these trees retained their appearance and constitution.
Unfortunately, another equally powerful devastating event arises. A volcanic eruption broke out, forming a layer of ash, covering the trees submerged in water up to 800 meters deep. Once dissolved in water, the ashes will mix with the minerals and fill the inside of the trunks, first with the fibers, then with the sap. The plant finds itself caught and buried under sediment. Over the millennia that followed, the plant part was almost replaced by minerals and became stone.
This phenomenon of silicification, caused by the filling of the cavities with citrine, agate, opal, chalcedony, or even amethyst, will generate a multitude of colors. Fossil woods come in many colors, different shapes, and varied designs. All these differences are due to the paths taken by the trees.
Fossil wood stones possess the characteristics of the mineral that pseudomorphed the wood, i.e. silica. So, we will call them “petrified wood”.
It should be noted that the colors of fossil wood differ depending on their composition and indicate precise notions about their formation:
-
presence of iron: red, yellow, orange, brown, violet, black or green color;
-
presence of uranium: yellow, brown or green color;
-
presence of carbon: black color;
-
presence of manganese: blue, purple or black color;
-
presence of nickel: green color;
-
presence of cobalt, chromium and copper: blue and green color;
-
presence of silicon dioxide: white and gray color.
The main deposits of fossil wood are found in Madagascar, the United States, Egypt, Argentina and France.
Fossil wood stone is an anchor stone that connects to the Earth. It promotes attention in people with a tendency to be distracted. It can even be used on hyperactive children to channel their energy.
It provides stability and solidity. In the event of too much control and self-mastery, it is known to represent the stone of letting go and allowing one to free oneself from old beliefs and habits linked to them. All this in order to break away from the pressure of the parental, educational and societal environment. It breeds patience and restores self-confidence.
By removing these harmful links from the past, fossil wood stone creates serenity in taking positions. Daily events and difficulties will no longer be insurmountable. It gives the opportunity to take a step back, to show courage in the face of the various situations that life imposes. And above all, it reinforces spontaneity and natural reactions.
This fossil wood is attributed with the ability to enjoy the simple pleasures of life. It encourages the completion of projects by providing motivation.
This fossil wood comes from the past, it is a real testimony which facilitates the connection to authenticity. It allows its wearer to detach themselves from material goods.
