PEN-ORTHPT-01
Origin: Morocco
Grade: A
Origin: Morocco
Grade: A
Dimensions:
About 40-60mm
Weight:
About 10g
Orthoceras with holes of approximately 20-30mm delivered with waxed cotton cord
Patterns and colors may vary from stone to stone.
Orthoceras lived during the Paleozoic Era, from the Ordovician about 470 million years ago until the end of the Permian, when they became extinct during the great Permian-Triassic extinction about 252 million years ago.
Orthocerans were cephalopods with univalve shells, like their distant cousins the nautiluses today, but the shell of orthocerans was straight, hence their name. Species range in size from a few centimeters to eleven meters in length for the largest members of this family. Like all nautiloids (and unlike ammonoids), the siphon that connects the chambers of the shell is in an axial position. Nautiloids are fairly common with a wide geographic distribution1 and extraordinary diversity in forms. Large orthocerans were the main predators of the Paleozoic geological era. The lifestyle of these animals remains partly unknown.
