Instructions for use: You can either directly light the bundle/smudge (leaf side) or detach some leaves and light them in a suitable burner (traditionally in an abalone shell).
Then extinguish the flame by fanning it, which allows the embers to consume the leaves and thus produce the life-saving smoke.
It is then necessary to go around each room completely in a clockwise direction, bundle or burner in hand, taking care to diffuse the smoke from bottom to top in corners, nooks, cupboards, wardrobes and other hard-to-reach places.
It is crucial, once the fumigation is complete, to open doors and windows in order to evacuate the thick smoke and everything it carries.
For the purification of a person or an object, the same procedure is followed, diffusing the smoke from bottom to top, from front to back.
Performing a purification in a calm and mindful manner is important; one can also recite a prayer or mantra at the same time to amplify its effects.
The residual ashes will be returned to our mother earth, scattered in nature or placed at the base of potted plants for city dwellers.
