Apatite is a generic name designating hexagonal phosphates of fairly variable composition, Ca5(PO4)3(OH,Cl,F). Having varied appearances and colors, apatite was for a long time confused with very diverse minerals, its composition chemical was not determined until the end of the 18th century. It is for this reason that the German mineralogist Abraham Gottlob Werner in 1786 gave it this name. The name is inspired by the Greek apatan (“to deceive”).
