Green chalcedony is a variety of chalcedony, a semi-precious stone belonging to the large quartz family. It is mainly composed of silicon dioxide (SiO₂) , but what distinguishes it is its green color, due to the presence of traces of nickel or other minerals.


🟢 Characteristics of green chalcedony:

  • Color: Pale green to deep green, sometimes translucent.

  • Hardness (Mohs scale): 6.5 to 7

  • Crystal system: Trigonal (microcrystalline, so no crystals visible to the naked eye)

  • Luster: Vitreous to silky

  • Transparency: Translucent to opaque

  • Chemical composition: SiO₂ with inclusions that give the color

  1. Chrysoprase :

    • The most precious of green chalcedonies.

    • Bright color due to the presence of nickel.

    • Highly sought after in jewelry.

  2. Nickeline or common green chalcedony :

    • Less vivid, duller or milky tint.

    • More widespread and less expensive.
