Chiastolite is a variety of andalusite , an aluminous mineral belonging to the silicate group. What makes it unique and recognizable is its natural black cross visible in cross-section, formed by inclusions of carbon or other dark minerals. Its name comes from the Greek chiastos (χιαστός), which means "marked with a cross".
