Collection: Heated Citrine

Heated citrine is amethyst, or more rarely smoky quartz, that has been kiln-fired at approximately 450 to 550 °C. The treatment destroys the purple color centers and brings out an orangey-yellow to reddish-brown hue, which is much more saturated than that of natural citrine. Two signs betray it: a whitish, milky base on points and geodes, and color concentrated at the crystal head, a zoning inherited from the original amethyst.

Heating is an ancient and perfectly legal lapidary practice that does not require disclosure under the 2002 decree on the gemstone trade.
