Natural Citrine

Natural citrine comes yellow out of the rock, without being kiln-fired. This is what distinguishes it from the vast majority of commercial citrine, which is heated amethyst. Its hue ranges from lemon yellow to honey yellow, distributed quite evenly throughout the stone, often accompanied by a light smoky veil. It shows neither a whitish base nor orange concentration at the crystal tip, two hallmarks of heating.

Deposits are few: Brazil, Madagascar, Congo, Bolivia, and Russia. This rarity explains the price difference compared to heated citrine, which is roughly double for standard sizes and even more for faceted stones. We inspect every batch upon receipt, and the grade is indicated on the product page.

Citrine is a variety of quartz, whose yellow color is due to the presence of tiny amounts of iron oxides in the mineral. Citrine is quite rarely found in its natural state. Most often it is heated amethyst which takes on a yellow color instead of violet. The term comes from the Latin citrus which designates lemon, in reference to its color.
