Collection: Cobaltocalcite

Cobaltocalcite , also called cobaltiferous calcite , is a rare and highly valued variety of cobalt- rich calcite .

🔬 Mineralogical characteristics

  • Chemical formula : CaCO₃ (calcium carbonate), with traces of Co²⁺ partially replacing the calcium.

  • Crystal system : trigonal.

  • Color : bright pink to magenta, due to the presence of cobalt (Co).

  • Hardness (Mohs scale) : 3 (relatively soft).

  • Luster : Vitreous.

  • Transparency : translucent to opaque.

📍 Origin and deposits

Cobaltocalcite is found mainly in cobalt and copper deposits, often associated with other minerals such as malachite, dolomite or sphalerite.

  • Main deposits :

    • Katanga (Democratic Republic of Congo) – one of the most famous for its spectacular specimens.

    • Bou Azzer (Morocco) – famous for its intense pink crystals.

    • Australia, Mexico, Peru , and other mineral-rich regions.

💎 Uses

  • Lithotherapy

    • Associated with the heart chakra .

    • Would promote unconditional love , self-acceptance and emotional healing .

    • Would bring gentleness, compassion and harmony .

  • Ornament and collection :

    • Also used in jewelry , although its softness makes it fragile.

⚠️ Precautions

  • Avoid prolonged exposure to water, acids or chemicals.

  • Very sensitive to mechanical shocks due to its low hardness.

🧠 Good to know

  • Cobalt gives the stone its pink/magenta hue, which clearly differentiates it from other forms of calcite (often white, yellow or orange).

  • Some cobaltocalcites can be confused with rhodochrosite at first glance, but their composition is different.
