Collection: Multicolored Fluorite

The stunning colors of multicolored fluorite are what gave it its reputation. Multicolored fluorite is a variety of calcium fluoride. Most crystallizations of this mineral are cubic. It has the ability to represent all colors of the light spectrum and can even fluoresce under violet light.

This stone is semi-transparent, incredibly bright, and incredibly colorful. Its chromatic variations are rich. Its colors range from purple, pink, and brown to yellow, blue, and green, among others. Fluorite is basically colorless, and the presence of organic compounds or metals, which are chromogenic elements, determines its color.

To this day, it is the most colorful stone in the world. The most popular colors in fluorite are blue, yellow, green, and purple. But the most spectacular specimens are those that are multicolored. Others also have the ability to change color depending on the light.

In 1797, the naturalist Carlo Antonio Galeani Napione (1757-1814) named this mineral “fluere,” which translates to “fluxing” or “melting.” This stone was already used as a flux in metallurgy and steelmaking. It has also had other names such as “fluorspar,” “fluorite,” or “calcium fluorite.”

Steelmakers use it as a flux, and this stone is also the basis for the production of hydrofluoric acid and all its derivatives, such as aluminum fluoride. In industry, fluorite is also used in the production of enamel, astronomical lenses, and translucent glass such as eyeglass lenses. It is renowned for its refractive and chromatic dispersion properties.

This stone is found mainly in granite mines and metamorphic rock mines (rock that has undergone a mineralogical and structural transformation due to an increase in temperature or pressure) with other metallic minerals, such as zinc, lead and silver sulfides.

Since ancient times, the exceptional colors of fluorite have captivated many civilizations. Multicolored or rainbow fluorite is highly prized. Indeed, it combines all the hues in a single crystal, often cubic in shape.

The Egyptians made statuettes, amulets in the form of pendants, and various jewelry from fluorite of different colors.

In China, green fluorite replaced jade in ornamental objects. Purple fluorite, on the other hand, protected against evil spirits.

The Greeks made their famous murrhin vases, which became extremely valuable objects. Nowadays, it has been established that murrhin was actually fluorite.

During archaeological excavations, fragments of fluorite objects were discovered in the ruins of Pompeii, a city infamous for its disappearance during an eruption of Vesuvius in 79 AD.

In the Middle Ages, fluorite had the sweet name of “ore flower”.

In the 18th century, fluorite mines were discovered in the Sheffield region of England. These fabulous stones had two colors: blue and yellow, and were named “Blue John.”

In France, in the 19th century, in 1861, during the construction of the Paris Opera, fluorite was used to shape the balustrades of the grand staircase.

It is worth noting the fragility of this stone, which has a hardness of 4 on the Mohs scale (for information: diamonds have a hardness of 10).

The main deposits of fluorite are located in China, Canada, France, etc.
