Collection: Violet Fluorite

Since ancient times, fluorite has been a stone particularly valued by several civilizations. Some even believed that this stone crystallized light.

Fluorite is renowned for its varied and beautiful colors. It can be found in blue, green, yellow, pink, purple, and even multicolored. When pure, it is transparent. Its multiple colors are derived from organic compounds or various metals.

Fluorite is a very abundant mineral in the world. It is found mainly in metamorphic rocks (rocks that have undergone a structural and mineralogical transformation due to a change in pressure and/or temperature) and in granite mines.

Fluorite is composed of calcium fluoride and its crystallization is generally cubic. Some varieties are fluorescent and others change color depending on the light. It has a hardness of 4 on the Mohs scale (in comparison, diamond has a hardness of 10 and emerald has a hardness of 8).

Nowadays, the use of fluorite in jewelry is less compared to its industrial use. It is used to produce hydrofluoric acid and derivatives such as aluminum fluoride. In industry, it is used in the production of enamel, spectacle lenses, astronomical lenses, etc. It is renowned for its refractive and chromatic dispersion qualities.

Steelmakers use fluorite as a flux. In fact, in the 16th century, metallurgists discovered that ores containing fluorite melted much more quickly. In 1529, Georgius Agricola (1494–1555) described fluorite and its properties in detail in his famous work, Re Metallica. For the record, he is the founder of mineralogy and metallurgy.

In 1797, Carlo Antonio Galeani Napione (1757 - 1814) studied fluorite and decided to name it “fluere,” which means “that which melts.” It has also been called “fluorspar,” “fluorite,” or “calcium fluorite.” Fluorite has the ability to fuse with many elements. Furthermore, the gas that makes up fluorite would be named “fluorine.”

In 1861, fluorite was used to make the balustrades of the staircase of the Opéra Garnier in Paris.

Before being used in industry or in the steel industry, fluorite was used to make jewelry, decorative objects, and statuettes in various shades.

For example, in ancient Egypt, fluorite was used to make beads, ornaments, scarab amulets, etc.

The Chinese sometimes replaced jade with green fluorite in the composition of their statuettes. They also used purple fluorite to ward off evil spirits.

The Greeks believed that fluorite enhanced intelligence and skill. They believed that this mineral developed reflection and dexterity.

It is worth noting that the famous Murrhin vases were made from murrhe, which turns out to be fluorite. These vases are currently highly sought after and extremely expensive.

Fragments of objects, jewelry, and fluorite glasses have been discovered in the ruins of the infamous city of Pompeii. This city was buried during an eruption of Vesuvius in 79 AD. It is now known that the Romans liked to drink their wine from purple fluorite glasses.

Writings dating back to the Middle Ages refer to fluorite as “ore flower”.

More recently, in the 18th century, a fluorite of two shades, yellow and blue, was discovered in the Sheffield region of England. Many collectors appreciate this specimen, which is known as “Blue John”.

Finally, the main deposits of fluorite are located in China, Mexico, Canada, France, etc.

Purple fluorite is a stone of concentration. It allows you to focus your attention on a specific moment or element to achieve optimal concentration. It organizes thoughts and emotions to help you make the right choices and facilitate learning or meditation. It also increases intellectual abilities. It is excellent for students or those in training.

Purple fluorite is said to bring wisdom and common sense. It is remarkable for clarifying and structuring ideas. It allows for discernment and has a beneficial effect on the mind. It increases intuition and drives away negative energies.

Purple fluorite helps overcome psychological blocks related to the past and provides self-confidence. It fights stress, fears, anxieties, and anxiety. It makes you want to move forward and achieve your goals. It banishes shyness, which often paralyzes those who suffer from it. It promotes openness to others. Indeed, it develops understanding, attention, compassion, and empathy.
