Heliotrope stone , also known as bloodstone , is a semi-precious stone belonging to the microcrystalline quartz family, more precisely a type of chalcedony .


🌿 Characteristics of heliotrope

  • Main color : dark green (often a deep forest green)

  • Characteristic inclusions : red or red-brown spots (which resemble drops of blood), due to the presence of iron oxide or hematite

  • Hardness (Mohs scale) : approximately 6.5 to 7

  • Transparency : opaque

  • Luster : Vitreous to matte


⚗️ Origin of the name

The word heliotrope comes from the Greek helios (sun) and trepein (to turn). According to some ancient beliefs, the stone had the ability to "turn the sun" or cause eclipses. The name bloodstone refers to the bloody appearance of the red inclusions on a green background.


🏛️ History & Symbolism

  • In ancient times it was used as a protective stone. The Babylonians used it in amulets.

  • In the Middle Ages , it was believed to have the power to stop bleeding. Some even associated it with the blood of Christ.

  • It was sometimes called the Martyrs' Stone because of its symbolic association with sacrifice.
