Howlite is a relatively unknown but highly valued semi-precious stone, especially in lithotherapy and jewelry.


🔹 Origin & Discovery

  • Discovered : in 1868 by Henry How , a Canadian chemist and geologist.

  • Name : it is named in homage to its discoverer.

  • Geological origin : it is a calcium borosilicate , often found in the form of massive nodules.


🔹 Physical characteristics

  • Natural color : white to light gray, with gray or black veins .

  • Appearance : It looks a lot like marble or porcelain.

  • Hardness : between 3.5 and 6.5 on the Mohs scale (rather soft).

  • Porosity : It is very porous, which makes it easy to dye — often blue to imitate turquoise .

Howlite is mainly found:

  • In Canada (place of its discovery)

  • In the United States (California in particular)

  • In Turkey , Germany , Mexico , etc.
