Originating from the island of Java in Indonesia, this rare stone, with magnificent sunflower yellow hues, is not actually a jasper or an agate. This stone is said to be composed of gypsum, sulfur, and hematite in a volcanic tuff matrix, and to a lesser extent, other minerals such as calcite or ilmenite may also be present in its chemical composition.
This stone was used as a dye and elixir in ancient times.
The indigenous people who exploit this area also call it "batu badar blerang," which means "coal that turns into sulfur." This idea probably comes from its black bands that seem to convert to yellow.
It became popular in the late 1990s when a local operator sent a first sample to Arizona for the geological fair.
Thanks to the sulfur this stone contains, Bumble Bee is said to protect against insects.
