Collection: Muscovite (Mica)

Muscovite is a very common mineral of the mica family, belonging to the silicate group.

🔹 General characteristics

  • Chemical formula : KAl₂(AlSi₃O₁₀)(OH)₂

  • Crystal system : Monoclinic

  • Color : Colorless, silvery, grayish, greenish or light brown

  • Luster : Pearly to vitreous

  • Hardness (Mohs scale) : 2 to 2.5

  • Cleavage : Perfect in sheets (typical characteristic of micas)

  • Density : Approximately 2.8 to 2.9

🔹 Structure

Muscovite consists of layers of silica (SiO₄) and aluminum tetrahedra, separated by potassium (K⁺) ions. This layered structure explains why it easily separates into thin, flexible but elastic lamellae.

🔹 Origin of the name

The name "Muscovite" comes from Russia , more precisely from the Moscow region, where it was used as a substitute for glass in windows in the Middle Ages (hence the old name "Muscovy glass").

🔹 Training and deposits

Muscovite forms in:

  • Metamorphic rocks : schists, gneiss

  • Igneous rocks : granites, pegmatites

  • Deposits : widespread throughout the world (Russia, Brazil, India, United States, Madagascar, etc.)

🔹 Uses

  • Electrical industry : thermal and electrical insulation (heat resistant)

  • Manufacture of paints, plastics and cosmetics : for its reflective properties and its finesse (shiny particles)

  • Geology : indicator of metamorphism

  • Decorative objects and collection

🔹 Differences with other micas

Muscovite is clear mica , as opposed to:

  • Biotite : dark mica (rich in iron and magnesium)

  • Phlogopite : reddish-brown mica, richer in magnesium

Muscovite is the most abundant mineral of the mica group. It is usually colorless, white, silvery or light brown, and sometimes also greenish, reddish or light pink. It forms six-sided tabular crystals, and sometimes also lamellar aggregates, scales and rosettes or stars.

It is a hydrated potassium aluminosilicate and is found in igneous, metamorphic, or shale rocks. It belongs to the subgroup of phyllosilicates (sheets of tetrahedra joined together with weak bonds). Its exfoliation is perfect, with thin and flexible leaves separated.

Main deposits: Switzerland, Russia, India, Austria, Czech Republic, Brazil and United States.

The benefits: Muscovite is considered a mystical stone which promotes intuition and psychic vision. It is said that it has the property of reflecting the mirrors that we project outside, what is difficult for us to recognize as ours, to transform and integrate. It helps open the heart chakra to unconditional love.

The Muscovite also represents balance and flexibility. It promotes communication, clarity and self-image.
