Frequently Asked Questions About Our Rough Opal Stones

How do you know if a raw opal is valuable?

The value of a rough opal depends on the intensity and diversity of its play-of-color, the size of the colored areas, and the body tone (a black or dark background makes the colors stand out better than a white background). Transparency and the absence of cracks also matter. Rough opals with a strong play-of-color visible without polishing are the most sought after. But beyond its market value, each rough opal has its own unique charm.

Does rough opal show its play of color like polished opal?

Color plays are present but often less visible than on a polished opal, as the rough surface diffuses light differently. By wetting the stone, the colors appear more clearly. Some rough opals have natural "windows" where the color plays are immediately visible. This is also what makes each piece surprising and unique.

Can raw opal crack on its own?

This is a real risk if it is poorly stored. Opal contains water in its structure, and sudden dehydration (direct sunlight, heat, very dry air) can cause cracks called "crazing". To avoid this, keep your rough opal out of direct sunlight, away from heat sources, and in an environment with normal humidity. If properly stored, it will remain stable for years.

Why choose a rough opal stone?

Rough opal is a stone that earns its appreciation. Beneath its often dull, grayish, sometimes earthy exterior lie plays of color just waiting for a sliver of light to reveal themselves. It is this constant surprise that makes rough opal so captivating: you turn it, you wet it, you put it under a lamp, and suddenly flashes of blue, green, and orange emerge from an unexpected place. Opal miners in Australia, Mexico, and Ethiopia experience this moment of discovery with every new stone unearthed. Holding a rough opal in your hand is like reliving a bit of that initial excitement.

In lithotherapy, rough opal is valued for its energy of inspiration, creativity, and emotional amplification in its most direct form. Placed in a creative workspace, it stimulates imagination and helps to think outside the box. On a bedside table, it accompanies dreams and promotes nocturnal intuition. Held in the hand during meditation, it opens channels of perception and helps connect with deep emotions. As with polished opal, remember that it is a mirror stone that amplifies the emotional state: it will be your best ally during periods of creativity and stability, but it can intensify emotions during difficult times.

For care, rough opal requires special attention. Opal contains water in its structure (3 to 20%) and is sensitive to dehydration. Never leave it in direct sunlight, near a radiator, or in a very dry environment. A soft, slightly damp cloth for cleaning and lunar light for recharging are sufficient. If you live in a very dry climate, store it in a slightly damp cloth to maintain its hydration and preserve its play of colors.
