The word comes from the ancient Greek amethustos, a verbal adjective composed of the verb methúô (“to be drunk”), and the privative prefix a-. The stone would have been so named because it has the color of wine mixed with water, which has a lower alcoholic strength. By comparison, it was thought to protect against drunkenness.
