Collection: Rhyolite

Rhyolite is a volcanic igneous rock , rich in silica (SiO₂) , often compared to granite , of which it is the volcanic equivalent.

🔬 Main features:

  • Composition :

    • Mainly composed of quartz , feldspars (orthoclase, plagioclase), and sometimes biotite or hornblende .

    • Very rich in silica (> 70%), which makes it very acidic geologically.

  • Texture:

    • Usually fine-grained or glassy due to the rapid cooling of the lava.

    • May have a porphyritic texture: a few visible crystals (phenocrysts) in a fine paste.

  • Color :

    • Varies between pale pink , gray , green , red , and brown depending on mineral inclusions.

    • Some rhyolites are very colorful and aesthetic (often used as ornamental stones).

🌋 Geological origin:

  • Formation : It forms during the eruption of silica-rich magmas , which cool rapidly on the surface.

  • Typical environment : Volcanic areas such as calderas , lava domes , or igneous plateaus.

  • It is often associated with explosive phenomena, because silica-rich magmas are very viscous and trap gases.

💎 Uses:

  • Construction and decoration : used locally as a cut or ornamental stone.

  • Semi-precious stone : certain very colorful varieties are used in jewelry or lithotherapy .

  • Lithotherapy : rhyolite is sometimes associated with virtues such as:

    • Promote personal transformation

    • Stimulate creativity

    • Soothe pent-up emotions

🌍 Where can we find it?

Rhyolite deposits exist in many volcanic regions around the world, including:

  • The United States (e.g., Yellowstone)

  • Australia
  • Iceland

  • Italy

  • The Massif Central in France
