Scapolite is a mineral belonging to a group of complex silicates, commonly found in metamorphic and igneous rocks.


🔷 Origin of the name

The name "scapolite" comes from the Greek skapos (stick) and lithos (stone), in reference to its often elongated prismatic crystalline shape.


🔬 Chemical composition

Scapolite is actually a series of solid solutions between two extremes:

  • Marialite : Na₄(Al₃Si₉O₂₄)Cl

  • Meionite : Ca₄(Al₆Si₆O₂₄)(CO₃,SO₄)

It often contains calcium , sodium , aluminum , silicon , as well as anions like Cl⁻ , CO₃²⁻ , SO₄²⁻ .
