Selenite is a crystalline form of gypsum , a mineral composed of hydrated calcium sulfate (CaSO₄·2H₂O) . It is a fascinating stone, both mineralogically and symbolically.

The name "selenite" comes from Selene , the Greek goddess of the Moon, because of the soft, pearly sheen this crystal can exhibit, reminiscent of lunar light.
