Serpentine is a metamorphic rock highly valued in lithotherapy, jewelry, sculpture and even architecture.

🟢 Origin of the name

The name "serpentine" comes from the Latin serpens (serpent), because of its appearance which sometimes recalls the skin of a snake: green hues with veins or spots.

🧱 Composition and training

• Mineralogical family : Silicates, phyllosilicate group.

• Chemical composition : Mainly magnesium, iron, silicon and sometimes aluminum.

• Formed by : Hydrothermal alteration of olivine-rich rocks, such as peridotite.

🎨 Appearance

• Dominant colors : Green (pale to dark), but may also contain yellowish, brownish or blackish hues.

• Appearance : Waxy to silky, sometimes translucent, often veined or mottled.

• Texture : Soft to the touch, often polished for decoration.

It is found in several countries, including:

• Italy (especially the ancient serpentine used in Rome)
