Unakite is a semi-precious stone belonging to the altered granite family, composed mainly of three minerals:

  • Epidote (green)

  • Pink feldspar (often orthoclase)

  • Quartz (usually colorless to grayish)

Its speckled green and pink appearance makes it easily recognizable and highly appreciated in lithotherapy and costume jewelry .


Origin and discovery

Unakite is named after the Unaka Mountains in Tennessee , USA, where it was discovered in the 19th century. It is also found in South Africa, Brazil, and France.


Physical properties

  • Hardness (Mohs scale) : 6 to 7

  • Color : mixture of green (epidote), pink (feldspar) and sometimes gray (quartz)

  • Transparency : opaque to translucent

  • Crystal system : monoclinic (epidote), triclinic (feldspar)
